Lacquer Paint on Wood canvas 116.0cm x 000cm
Paint is poured in the air to form shapes, and the three colors, not yet dried, spread under the influence of gravity. In this process, colors overlap and mix, creating unique patterns that are unexpected. It presents a visual shock and reveals an improvised presence, prompting the viewer to enter a state of contemplation.

Urethane and Lacquer Paint on Wood canvas,160cm x 120cm
The method of pouring automotive and industrial paints onto wooden boards and letting them harden was expressed by using a stick to stamp and throw the paint cans, as spray application was not possible. I began to observe the abstract techniques of both Eastern and Western styles.

Urethane and Lacquer Paint on Wood
160.2cm x 130.5cm, Unframed
In 2017, when there was no studio, I used a corner of my parents’ factory. I worked by pouring automotive paint and industrial paint onto wooden boards to let them harden. At that time, it was practically impossible to spray paint, so I symbolically represented the situation by using methods like hitting and throwing paint cans with a stick. I began to observe abstract techniques from both Eastern and Western art.

The work was carried out by pouring industrial paint onto a wooden board and allowing it to set. At that time, spraying was practically impossible, so methods like dipping a stick into the paint can and throwing it were used to symbolically express the situation. I began to observe abstract techniques from both Eastern and Western art.

This work reveals the shape of a semicircle. It is characterized by an apparently random form composed of colors layered on wet paint. To transform linear forms into curves, I tilted the canvas from a frontal to an angled position, establishing a foundation to control flowing shapes with less influence from gravity.

The balance of paint’s flow and form, as well as the mixture of colors, is observed. The movement, which began without purpose, gradually falters and transfers paint onto the canvas. In the process of the brush moving the paint to the canvas, unintentional shapes are created and distorted by gravity. Initially, the upright canvas tilts, reducing the influence of gravity and acknowledging changes in form. The colors reflect the inner sensations and the surrounding environment. This work is recorded, considering the meaning of the layers of paint that have been applied. It is a work from 2017.

The flow and balance of paint, as well as the mixing of colors, can be observed. Movements that began without purpose gradually hesitate, transferring paint onto the canvas. In the process of the brush moving paint onto the canvas, unintentional shapes are created and deformed by gravity. At first, the upright canvas tilts, reducing the influence of gravity and allowing for the recognition of shape changes. The colors reflect inner sensations and the surrounding environment. This work has layers of paint added and is recorded while contemplating the meaning of what is accumulated. It is a work from 2017.

The liquid was mixed, and white and blue pigments overlapped on a wooden board. While adjusting the flowing forms and during the drying process, I witnessed the phenomenon of colors and boundaries blurring. Despite repeating various works, I failed to reproduce similar forms. It became clear that the differences in the wood materials were also an important factor. The installation work took place at the Korean restaurant ‘Miajeon Seoul’ near Dosan Park in Seoul from 2020 to 2025.

The use of water-soluble paint resulted in the observation of mixed and overlapping shapes. Although a blue work pattern was attempted, the desired form did not emerge. Dreamlike shapes arose, and while I wanted to repeat the same work, there were insufficient materials. I laid white water-based paint on the floor, and the effects of cracking and the wooden floor were recorded based on thickness. Experiments were also conducted with white and black, but the desired shapes did not materialize. When the concentration of water matched the flow rate, uniform work was possible. The results are displayed in photographer Scott Jung’s studio.

The process of covering the screen evokes thoughts of balance and harmony within the frame through color and light. The screen that begins with “Untitled” elicits various emotions shaped by the direction of gravity. The audience can interpret it differently based on their individual experiences, exploring the freedom of the medium. These elements combine to convey a message that is both personal and universal. All elements of emotion exist within a thin frame.

I mistakenly chose the medium, which resulted in stickiness even after drying, and the product had a terrible smell, so I decided not to use it. During the process, I mixed various colors into the medium to create a translucent effect and layered them in multiple coats. This was to observe the combinations of colors and explore new hues. Through this experiment, I aim to find the desired shades and gain inspiration for my next project.
